A Team Quiz Competition
I. OBJECTIVES
-
Encourage students to expand their knowledge while having fun;

Promote greater interest and appreciation of the courses in the different programs of study;

Provide students with an opportunity to work in a team towards a common goal; and
-
Identify and recognize students who exhibit exemplary performance in quiz competition.
II. THE COMPETITION
- The Quiz Bee is a quiz competition participated in by teams of students with exemplary knowledge on various disciplines and their applications.
- It is an event to watch as students are expected to display their ingenuity, analytical ability and knowledge.
- The competition is divided into three rounds: ONCE AND FOR ALL, DOUBLE THE FUN and TRIPLE TREAT. For each round, the teams are given an equal chance to answer all the questions, including the Think Twice Questions. Think Twice questions are pre-determined among the ten (10) questions for each round and will be signified by the Think Twice Sound. These questions allow the teams to strategize because they are given the options to answer (GO) or not (PASS). Points assigned to Think Twice Questions are twice as much as the points assigned to regular questions. Teams opting to answer will either earn additional points for correct answers or lose points for in correct answers. A team opting to pass waives its opportunity to answer therefore will not earn or lose a point.
- For the ONCE AND FOR ALL ROUND, there are ten (10) questions and each question is worth one (1) point. The teams are given fifteen (10) seconds to answer each item unless specified in the question. In this round, only one (1) Think Twice question worth two (2) points will be asked.
- For the DOUBLE THE FUN ROUND, there are ten (10) questions and each question is worth two (2) points. The teams are given fifteen (15) seconds to answer each item unless specified in the question. In this round, two (2) Think Twice question worth four (4) points each will be asked.
- For the TRIPLE TREAT ROUND, there are ten (10) questions and each question is worth three (3) points. The teams are given twenty (20) seconds to answer each item unless specified in the question. In this final round, three (3) Think Twice question worth six (6) points each will be asked.
III. SUBJECT COVERAGE
- Information and Communications Technology – topics include computer concepts, data organization, current technology trends, systems analysis and development, database applications, logic design and switching, computer architecture and organization, software engineering and project management, operating system, computer networks, data structures, & algorithms and compiler design
- Mathematics – includes topics in Basic Math Concepts, Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry, Discrete Math, Probability and Statistics, Calculus, Problem Solving
IV. THE COMPETING TEAM
- Each school is entitled to send one team composed of three (3) entrants and a maximum of two (2) substitutes per division.
- The schools must assign a faculty member as a coach. The coach is also the team’s official representative and the only authorized person to file a protest in behalf of the entrants.
V. THE BOARD OF JUDGES (BOJ)
- The Board of Judges shall be composed of three (3) members who will convene to resolve any issue that may arise during the conduct of the competition. Members of the BOJ are professional or expert in the areas of information and communications technology, and mathematics.
VI. MECHANICS
- Each team is provided with a blackboard and a chalk.

A place shall be designated for all coaches.

The emcee shall introduce the contestants with their coaches, members of the Board of Judges.

The BOJ is provided with a hardcopy of the questions per round sealed in separate envelopes.

The contestants are given three (3) trial questions for them to test before the actual competition.

Questions shall be displayed on the projected screen.

All questions shall be read twice and the timer starts when the emcee says “Go”.

Contestants write their answers on the board provided. Contestants may answer while the question is still being read.

a member of each team is required to write the team’s answers on the provided clean sheets of paper which will be collected after each round. Note that written answers must be the same with the keyed in answers. This will only be checked and accepted by the BOJ when a complaint is filed.

Answers with wrong spelling and capitalization are considered incorrect.

The BOJ has the authority to override the the answers on the answer sheet.

For items which will require multiple answers, a comma must be used to separate each item.

Calculators are not allowed for questions that require computations. Answers that require computations must be written in their simplest forms.

For Think Twice questions, the subject area will be mentioned before the competing teams are given ten (10) seconds to decide whether they will opt to answer (GO) or not (PASS). Teams will decide by raising the green flag for “GO” and red flag for “PASS”. Any team that fails to raise their flags after the ten-second deciding time has elapsed will be automatically be considered as having opted for “GO” and will be automatically REQUIRED to answer the Think Twice question.

Only teams that opted to “GO” are allowed to answer the Think Twice question. The teams with the correct answer are awarded with the designated points while the teams with incorrect answers get the designated point deductions from their accumulated points. A NO ANSWER is considered an INCORRECT answer and gets the designated point deductions.

Teams that opted to “PASS” are not allowed to answer the Think Twice question. The answer text box or option button in their assigned computer unit is disabled. Thus, their scores remain the same.

After each question, the teams are given appropriate scores. Accumulated scores are flashed on the provided screen.

To determine the ranking, points for the three rounds are accumulated. The three teams with the highest accumulated points shall be declared as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. However, a team that gets zero and below will not be declared a winner even when there are only three or less competing teams.

In the event of a tie, a tie-breaking question is given. Whoever gives the first correct answer wins.

In cases wherein a team encounters a technical problem, the team should get the attention of the emcee by raising their hand. The emcee will then allow their authorized representative or coach to attend to their concern.
VII. FILING OF PROTESTS
- Only the official coaches are allowed to file a protest.
- Protest to be made by the authorized representative is done by raising his right hand immediately before the next question is read. The representative will be asked to approach the judges to settle the issue.
- Any protest made, once another question is read, will not be entertained.
- Controversies and objections are resolved by the Board of Judges before the next question is read by the emcee. The decision of the BOJ is final and irrevocable.
